There is still some confusion over the name of this South African city at the time of writing. It was originally known as Pietersburg however it is now officially known as Polokwane. However many street signs have yet to be changed and most white South Africans still refer to it as Pietersburg which makes it a confusing issue.

Polokwane is the capital city in the province of Limpopo. Polokwane (Pietersburg) International Airport can be found five kilometres to the North of the city. To add in a little more confusion it is also sometimes known as Gateway Airport.

It first opened its doors in 1996. Currently the only regular flights being offered are run by South African Airways who fly to Johannesburg four times every weekday as well as operating fewer flights on weekends.

Polokwane has received much more coverage than locals would be used to since the cities involvement in the 2010 World Cup. The Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane was built in order to host World Cup games. It can hold up to forty six thousand people and was named in honour of the once leader of the ANC Youth League. It can be found four kilometres from the city centre located to the east of the cities original stadium.

Hiring a car in Pietersburg can be arranged at the airport or downtown. Cheap car hire Polokwane deals are available right here all year round. Get a quote today and make considerable savings.

A nice relaxing place to visit is the Pietersburg Game Reserve. Here you can observe up to twenty one species while enjoying a nice pleasant stroll around the grounds. One recommended museum worth a look is the Bakone Malapa Museum which gives an insight into past and present lifestyles in the area. The Eersteling Monuments offer tourists a chance to get a close up look at South Africa’s 1st gold power plant.
