The resort was first opened in 1979 by Mr. Sol Kerzner in Bophuthatswana.  At this time Bophuthatswana had been made an independent state. This meant that the laws were lax compared to the rest of the country when it came to activities such as gambling and other pursuits that go hand in hand with casino resorts.

The resort quickly grew in popularity attracting heavyweight music icons such as Queen, Ray Charles and Elton John to perform at the Sun City Super Bowl. Major boxing events were also held at the arena. The tide turned against the resort however in the mid eighties when several high profile musicians collaborated on a song called Sun City under the banner “United Against Apartheid” and pledged never to play the resort.

Since the emergence of the new South Africa in 1994 Sun City has thrived. The four major hotels are Cascades Hotel, Sun City Hotel, the Palace of the Lost City and the Cabanas.

Golf enthusiasts will love the two eighteen hole golf courses which are available. Both courses were designed by Gary Player. They are located at the Gary Player Country Club and the Lost City Golf Course.

There is much to entertain all the family in Sun City. There are plenty of shows on to please both adults and children. The Valley of the Waves Waterpark is a fun day out where you can enjoy man made waves and a beach while attempting some of the mazy rides which are available.
