Durban Airport is considered to be one of the three international airports in South Africa. It is the smallest of the three behind Johannesburg and Cape Town. It was previously called Louis Botha Airport.

There are currently only three airlines offering international flights from Durban Airport. There has been a steady drop in international traffic over the years with at one stage only one airline (Singapore Airlines) offering flights out of South Africa. The runway at Durban Airport is considered to be too short for a Boeing 747 plane which has made it difficult to attract airlines.

Currently Air Mauritius offer flights to Mauritius, Emirates offer a Dubai route and South African Airlink fly to Maputo. Domestic flights are offered by eight airlines including British Airways, South African Airways, Interlink Airlines and 1Time.

Between April 2007 and March 2008 almost four and a half million passengers used the airport. There are six car hire Durban Airport firms available at the airport. Car hire offers a cheap option of seeing Durban and its surrounding regions. Value for money car hire South Africa quotes can be obtained on this website.  Compare the prices of top local companies today and save money.

There have been numerous attempts over the years to move the airport to a more suitable location. In 2007 permission was granted to build an airport thirty kilometres North of Durban. The airport will be called King Shaka International Airport. It is hoped that the airport will be completed in 2010 for the World Cup. Local authorities hope to attract many more international airlines to the new airport.
