We have already written a car hire Cape Town Airport guide so we are now going to take a closer look at the city of Cape Town. It is the largest city in the province of the Western Cape and the 2nd biggest city in all of South Africa. Locals sometimes refer to it as the mother city. It is situated in the south west of the country with locations such as Stellenbosch and Franschhoek within easy driving distance.
Many consider early autumn to be the best time of year to visit Cape Town with winter time also being preferred for those seeking hot sunshine. These are the warmest months of the year in Cape Town. During October and November it is still reasonably cool however December to March is normally a different story with blistering temperatures. Long hot evenings are the norm in January and February making it a splendid getaway for sun starved Europeans in the winter time.
The Castle of Good Hope is a nice place to wile away a few hours. Here you can observe the castles art collection as well as various other historical pieces. The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens offer a peaceful break from city life with an incredibly diverse range of plant life on offer.
Robben Island is a place filled with history having once been used as a prison for political protestors of which include Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu (R.I.P). There are tours offered here, some of which are led by former prisoners which as you can imagine offers a fascinating insight into how life was on the island.
There are lots of museums worth visiting in Cape Town. District Six Museum presents a bleak history of the area when the government tried to make it a white’s only area. Eventually the homes in the area were destroyed and it remains uninhabited. The museum tells the story of the people who used to live there and their fight to keep their homes. Some other museums worth visiting include the Slave Lodge, Bo-Kaap Museum and the South African Jewish Museum.
